Much of the history of dentistry is quite interesting, but many people do not know a lot about the early stages of dentistry and how it progressed over thousands of years.
For example, the first recorded dentist was an Egyptian by the name of Hesy-Ra who lived around 2600 BC.
Here are some of the most interesting facts about the history of dentistry:
- Queen Elizabeth was known to have discolored teeth due to an ancient myth. Many people around that time thought there was something called a “dental worm” that would burrow into teeth and create sharp pains. In order to combat the dental worm, the Queen consumed large amounts of sugar.
- China created the first bristle toothbrush in the Tang Dynasty, this brush was made using hogs hair.
- During the Maya Civilization, people would use sea shells when they needed to replace their permanent teeth.
- Between the 5th and 15th century, barbers also acted as dentists.
